A little chick update (as promised)!
The chicks are settling into the Hyett household very well, they all seem very happy and content. They are getting so big now! As for the little chick with the poorly eye, it seems to be improving as the days go by - I will continue to bathe it and hopefully it'll be as right as rain soon!
I will attach some photos later in the week.
I hope you are all having a lovely break.

As another half-term draws to an end, we reflect on how far we have come this year! It really is hard to believe that there is only one half-term left.
This week has brought this half-term to a very busy (and exciting) close. Aspen class were fortunate enough to have a coaching session with Tottenham Hotspur, which they loved! We also had a very exciting First Aid lesson – in the event of an emergency, the children now know what to do (ask them about DR ABC – a very useful strategy to remember CPR). The children realised the importance of this life skill and how difficult CPR is when using our CPR dummies. In maths, we continued learning about shape – extending to nets and recognising different 3D shapes when they are unfolded. In English, we completed our writing assessments – writing an autobiography from the perspective of our focus heroine, Harriet Tubman. In ICT, we began our new topic – Microbits! We look forward to tinkering with them when we return from half-term, and in the coming weeks they will learn how to use code to enable the Microbits to perform a range of functions. In science, we continued learning about forces and used Newton Meters to measure mass.
In other news, our chicks are doing incredibly well – it has been an incredible privilege to watch them hatch and grow, and the children have taken responsibility for their care and have been handling these delicate creatures with great care and attention. We are very grateful to Rosy and her family for allowing us to use their equipment in order to enjoy this unique and special experience.
We are concluding our week with Sports Day, a very enjoyable event each year!
Have the best half term break – remember it is two weeks this time!

After a lovely short week last week, we are back to our normal timetable.
In maths, we have continued translating – using a range of different 2D shapes and coordinating grids (including four quadrants). In English/History, we have been learning about an incredible legend that helped to liberate thousands of enslaved people from Southern American states using a secret Underground Railroad – Harriet Tubman. We will be using our knowledge of her unbelievable heroism to write autobiographies from her perspective next week, as part of our writing assessment. In art, we have created fabulous half-sunflowers to combine with a partner's half to create a whole sunflower on our beautiful display! We also recreated the famous 'Starry Night' by Van Gogh.
We have had some exciting developments with our chicks - they have begun to hatch!! It was the most incredible experience to watch this amazing event unfold. We cannot wait to have a cuddle with them next week!
We have a very busy final week of this half-term next week, with Aspen enjoying a Tottenham Hotspur session on Monday (please remember your PE kits); First Aid training; and sports day on Friday afternoon. We hope to see many of you there to cheer us on!
Have a wonderful weekend.

We hope you all had a wonderful, restful Bank Holiday weekend!
This week in our learning, we have moved on to another rea of geometry in our maths - learning about quadrilaterals, regular and irregular polygons and translation. The children continue to showcase such a thirst for knowledge in this topic. In English, we have continued our learning on the Transatlantic Slave Trade and we have brought these terrible experiences to life through poetry; we brought this to life through some freeze-frames in drama. The children were incredibly mature and sensitive with this particular topic. In art, we have created some sunflower masterpieces. Combining our own half with a peer's half, we have developed a collaborative piece.
This week we were fortunate enough to participate in two virtual sessions! The first was called 'Life on Earth' and focused on specific jobs that we could aspire to as we grow up. The second was with a local author 'Iqbal Hussain', we are also lucky enough to have his most recent book in each class – The Night I Borrowed Time. It was great to ask questions and take inspiration from someone so local!
Hawthorn have been enjoying their Forest School sessions with Mrs Lovell, please see some lovely pictures below! It really is such a wonderful time of year to get out into nature!
We had one more Briliant Club celebration this week, the children will be taking their certificates home. They enjoyed sharing their experience with their classmates and the traditional throwing of the hats!
Please note a letter is coming out this week regarding a very exciting event we have organised for the children - a VR workshop linked with our volcano topic! This event will be on Monday 8th June and will be funded by the Enterprise money raised.
Have a wonderful weekend everyone.

What an incredible week we have had in year 5 - from Brilliant Club, to celebration assemblies, chicks and road safety - it has been choc-a-block!
In maths, we have been finding missing angles in right angles, straight lines and full circles. Choosing our challenge in accordance with our confidence levels, everyone has really pushed themselves in these lessons. In History, we have started our new topic - the Transatlantic Slave Trade. This topic has been very eye opening for the children so far and has encouraged many questions. In Art, we have continued our artist study of Vincent Van Gogh and taken inspiration from his sketches of shoes - using them to create our own. Due to the glorious weather, we have been able to enjoy a few OTTER time sessions outside - this is a welcome opportunity to encourage the children to read for pleasure.
As previously mentioned, the Brilliant Club children were fortunate enough to go to Kings College London on Monday and enjoyed a tour, followed by a much deserved graduation ceremony. The children have worked so hard this year completing their assignments and it was wonderful to see them enjoy their moment in the spotlight! Whilst we were at Kings College, the children back at school enjoyed a road safety talk and practical session; in which they were taught the Stop, Look, Listen approach to road safety and taken out to demonstrate their knowledge on real roads. Some of the children were also lucky enough to go and visit the chicks in the Nursery on this day!
Have a wonderful, long bank-holiday weekend everyone!

The children are well and truly settled back into school now and we've had a very busy week. Aspen have been lucky enough to enjoy two forest school sessions (please enjoy some photos below) - Hawthorn's sessions commence next week. In maths, we have started our new topic - angles. In our lessons we identified different angles that were taped onto our desks (acute, right, obtuse and reflex); we learnt to use a protractor to measure angles; and we learnt to draw our own angles. It's been a really enjoyable topic so far! In Geography, we have been learning more about the Alps and creating some incredible leaflets showcasing our knowledge. In art, we have begun our new artist focus - Vincent Van Gogh. We created portraits of him and in the coming weeks we will use his famous works to inspire our own art. In PE, we our second swimming lesson, in which we showed our growth mindsets and determination to improve and develop our skills. And finally, in our reading lessons we were introduced to our new history topic, the Transatlantic Slave Trade, the children have already shown great, maturity, curiosity and sensitivity towards this very serious topic.
We have another busy week on the horizon, including the Brilliant Club graduation trip and a Road Safety session - we cannot wait! Please note that Aspen's Tottenham coaching session is now on the 18th May.
Have a wonderful weekend.

Welcome back! It is great to have the children back, the summer term is already in full swing and the children have been very busy this week.
In maths, we have continued our learning on percentages, which has tested our growth mindset and resilience. We have moved from strength to strength in this tricky topic, finishing with word problems to deepen our learning. In Geography, we have started learning about mountains and we have focused on The Alps this week as we plan to make leaflets about them next week. In ICT, we used laptops and iPads to research some incredible information about the Alps. Ask us any facts, we are experts now! In science, we have been learning the timeline of a human life-cycle, creating our own timelines showing the stages of a human life.
We began our swimming lessons on Wednesday; the children behaved impeccably, showed incredible maturity and were a credit to the school. We are all so excited to go back next week!
In extra news, the Aspen butterflies emerged from their chrysalises and were released over the Easter holidays. It is unfortunate that the children were not present to see it occur, but they were able to watch a video of the release. One of our butterflies emerged with a broken wing, so we have been keeping it safe in class!
Finally, we have been told that we are part of two amazing projects! First, the mini-marathon, in which we will work as a school to run a 'mini-marathon' each (2 miles), our training has already begun! Second, an incredible new art project, in which we are to decorate a statue of a lion. This lion will then form part of an art trail in the local area, it will be wonderful to see it out in public! Once the art trail has finished, our lion will return to school to take 'pride' of place!
Have a wonderful weekend.
Mrs Hyett & Miss Dennis.
